There is also another characteristic uncertainty affecting the inference that the law of variation which the quantities observe within our limits of observation, will hold beyond those limits. There is, of course, in the first instance, the possibility that beyond the limits, and in circumstances therefore of which we have no direct experience, some counteracting cause might develop itself; either a new agent or a new property of the agents concerned, which lies dormant in the circumstances we are able to observe. This is an element of uncertainty which enters largely into all our predictions of effects; but it is not peculiarly applicable to the Method of Concomitant Variations. The uncertainty, however, of which I am about to speak, is characteristic of that method; especially in the cases in which the extreme limits of our observation are very narrow, in comparison with the possible variations in the quantities of the phenomena. Any one whohas the slightest acquaintance with mathematics, is aware that very different laws of variation may produce numerical results which differ but slightly from one another within narrow limits; and it is often only when the absolute amounts of variation are considerable, that the difference between the results given by one law and by another becomes appreciable. When, therefore, such variations in the quantity of the antecedents as we have the means of observing are small in comparison with the total quantities, there is much danger lest we should mistake the numerical law, and be led to miscalculate the variations which would take place beyond the limits; a miscalculation which would vitiate any conclusion respecting the dependence of the effect upon the cause, that could be founded on those variations. Examples are not wanting of such mistakes. The formulæ, says Sir John Herschel,[136] “which have been empirically deduced for the elasticity of steam (till very recently), and those for the resistance of fluids, and other similar subjects, when relied on beyond the limits of the observations from which they were deduced, “have almost invariably failed to support the theoretical structures which have been erected on them. Annie, how often must I apologize for...? Dr. Dixon shook his head. As late as the Copernican controversy it was urged as an argument in favor of the true theory of the solar system, that it placed the fire, the noblest element, in the centre of the universe. This was a remnant of the notion that the order of nature must be perfect, and that perfection consisted in conformity to rules of precedency in dignity, either real or conventional. Again, reverting to numbers: certain numbers wereperfect, therefore those numbers must obtain in the great phenomena of nature. Six was a perfect number, that is, equal to the sum of all its factors; an additional reason why there must be exactly six planets. The Pythagoreans, on the other hand, attributed perfection to the number ten; but agreed in thinking that the perfect number must be somehow realized in the heavens; and knowing only of nine heavenly bodies, to make up the enumeration, they asserted that there was an antichthon, or counter-earth, on the other side of the sun, invisible to us.[260] Even Huygens was persuaded that when the number of the heavenly bodies had reached twelve, it could not admit of any further increase. Creative power could not go beyond that sacred number. Her name is Lang, Mom, Dr. Lang. Shes a respected psychiatrist at Mount... Rob Trenton said,Your Honor. I feel that I have some rights in this case. I... She sounded sick, but a hell of a lot soberer. Ostrander glanced at Linda Carroll. The Wendel girl was prettier than Id thought she’d be from her picture. Medium-sized, quite dark, and apparently not too fond of talking. At least she seemed to spend most of her time either listening or dancing. Our eyes meet. Rob Trenton suddenly pushed his chair back, got to his feet.Your Honor, he asked, “do I have the privilege of making any comment? I had four numbers and began to believe I was going to draw a blank. The first two girls I called were busy that night. But the third said shed just love to go out and so on and I said I’d call for her at eight. I’d taken the numbers more from habit than anything else and couldn’t remember just which one of the many Rucci had introduced me to she was, but I figured I’d know her when I met her. I got the house doctor up and hada bit neater job done on my sore ear, and he was just leaving when Kewpie came in. Lester said to me:Can I come too? Thered been so many hard words that I’d hardly had a chance to look at him. He was sitting over in the corner with a bright and interested look and watching Macintosh and me through his goggles as though he’d never properly looked at us before. I looked at Mac and nodded the least bit and Mac said: Never mind talking about whats gone before, Trenton said. I want to conduct my own defence from now on, and in order to do it I have to discharge you. Therefore, you’re discharged. Do you understand that? But that couldnt have been, Doctor, the district attorney shouted. Your testimony is against all the evidence. The gun was fired twice, prior to the time the fire started, and after that the gun was accounted for all the time. A glance at the clock on the dashboard told him that his maneuvers in connection with the surreptitious approach to his house had cost him approximately forty-five minutes of precious time. He knew that his hours of liberty were numbered. Soon he was going to be called upon to make some convincing explanation, and at the moment he realized all too painfully that any explanation he could make would be far from convincing..
