Just outside Atlanta. Im on the desk. Crandalls his lawyer, same as he’s the lawyer for most of the money men in town. Crandall’s good I guess; I don’t know him. In the cases of polished metal and polished glass, the contrast shows evidently that thesubstance has much to do with the phenomenon; therefore let the substance alone be diversified as much as possible, by exposing polished surfaces of various kinds. This done, a scale of intensity becomes obvious. Those polished substances are found to be most strongly dewed which conduct heat worst; while those which conduct heat well, resist dew most effectually. The complication increases; here is the Method of Concomitant Variations called to our assistance; and no other method waspracticable on this occasion; for the quality of conducting heat could not be excluded, since all substances conduct heat in some degree. The conclusion obtained is, that cæteris paribus the deposition of dew is in some proportion to the power which the body possesses of resisting the passage of heat; and that this, therefore (or something connected with this), must be at least one of the causes which assist in producing the deposition of dew on the surface. A practical joker? I maintain then, first, that uniformity of past experience is very far from being universally a criterion of truth. But secondly, inconceivableness is still further from being a test even of that test. Uniformity of contrary experience is only one of many causes of inconceivability. Tradition handed down from a period of more limited knowledge, is one of the commonest. The mere familiarity of one mode of production of a phenomenon often suffices to make every other mode appear inconceivable. Whatever connects two ideas by a strong association may, and continually does, render their separation in thought impossible; as Mr. Spencer, in other parts of his speculations, frequently recognizes. It was not for want of experience that the Cartesians were unable to conceive that one body could produce motion in another without contact. They had as much experience of other modes of producing motion as they had of that mode. The planets had revolved, and heavy bodies had fallen, every hour of their lives. But they fancied these phenomena to be produced by a hidden machinery which they did not see, because without it they were unable to conceive what they did see. The inconceivableness, instead of representing their experience, dominated and overrode their experience. Without dwelling further on what I have termed the positive argument of Mr. Spencer in support of his criterion of truth, I pass to his negative argument, on which he lays more stress. For a moment, Rob had a fleeting hope that Linda had been delayed somewhat in connection with the unloading of her car, and that he might still catch her, but on inquiry he learned that the cars were handled expeditiously, that Linda had driven away hours ago, and that she had left the necessary documents and instructions to enable Rob to pick up the little car. Is your father still painting? Mr. Alvarez asks. He was doing the lawyer trick; sitting back and letting me do the talking. He was a shrewd-looking young buck, though, and I thought hed be a good man to have on our side. I said: Kirby said thoughtfully:I wanted to tell you this, Connell, because I think Wendel is mixed up with this murder someway. I know youre in the clear, of course. But I don’t know anything about him. 270 Clank. Chapter XXV. Some A is B and Some A is not B Rob bent over the figure and for a moment seemed to be all thumbs. He realized how difficult it is to search someone else. A side trousers pocket yielded Robs knife, which he knew was razor sharp, and then he turned back the man’s coat and found a .32-caliber automatic which he withdrew from a shoulder holster. Kewpie said, very quickly:I though he was broke and hitch-hiking?.
