During my career as a trial lawyer, I learned the necessity of holding the interest of a jury during an argument, and I am free to confess that I resorted to gesture, pose, change of pace, voice inflection, even the baiting of opposing counsel, in order to accomplish my purpose. Therefore, when I was privileged to enroll in one of Dr. Moritzs classes on Homicide Investigation at the Harvard Medical School Seminars, I could not help but marvel at the manner in which this man had the undivided attention of the class without using a single bit of oratorical trickery. There were virtually no gestures, no raising of the voice, no motionof the body. Dr. Moritz sat calmly at the head of the table and talked. While from time to time he has an interesting trick of changing the pace of his voice, the thing which really holds the interest of his audience is the manner in which the man catalogs, classifies, and expresses his ideas. His thoughts are interesting because the man himself is interesting. He sees beneath the surface, and I think he is impatient of any theory which cannot be put to practical use. Annie raises her eyebrows, and then does a quick impression of the scowling woman, which sets me off on another round of laughter, which causes me to choke on my cappuccino. The woman virtually snorts in disapproval. She snaps her book shut, gathers up her belongings, and storms out of the shop. Annie watches her go, imitating her waddle from the waist up. I keep laughing and choking and finally my sister says,Are you allright, Andy? and I tell her Im fine, and begin laughing and choking all over again. AD and AE are sums of equals by the supposition. Having that mark of equality, they are concluded by this formula to be equal. She did not say they were FBI agents. I could easily have believed she was talking about Dengs own people. Promise? Trenton, a sudden suspicion crystallizing in his mind, whipped the anonymous letter from his pocket.Im going to ask you a question, he said, “and be damned careful how you answer it because I’m not going to take your word for it. I’m going to do some independent checking up. Do you know anything about this? I agreed with him and he stood up and we shook hands. I told him Id tell him when I got a new address and he followed me to the door of his office. Then he said, very softly: He whispered:I... I... I called her p-puzzums. Im afraid you’d botch it up. Sure. You put the bee on him. Chapter Eight Im afraid I don’t know any other people to ask, Linda said slowly. A massive man is standing in the doorframe, lighted from behind He is bald, totally bald, and naked to the waist, and barefooted. He is wearing only trousers fastened at the waist with a black belt. And that, I suppose, Rob said, was why you wanted the four cowbells. The second smash cracked the glass into sharp fragments, and Rob wedged one of these circular, knife-edged fragments in between the shaft and the wall, then lying on his back, started sawing away at the rope which held his wrists. Good, she says, and takes my hand in hers again..
